Destinations

Manaus3 nights

ManausManausManaus

Capital of Amazonas state and the gateway to the Amazon rainforest, a city of about two million people at the meeting of the dark Rio Negro and the sand-coloured Rio Solimões (the ‘Meeting of the Waters’). From the rubber boom of the late 19th century remain the Teatro Amazonas opera house, the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa market hall and the Palácio Rio Negro. From Manaus, jungle lodges in several comfort classes offer multi-day stays on full board with daily excursions; multi-day boat trips are an alternative.

Amazon3 nights

AmazonAmazonAmazon

The Amazon rainforest around Manaus is reached through lodges that offer full-board stays with daily excursions in small groups: canoe trips, jungle walks, visits to riverside communities, piranha fishing and night trips. The region is not uniform: the várzea forest around the Rio Negro floods in the wet season, while the highlands around Presidente Figueiredo (107 km from Manaus, known for its waterfalls) stay dry. Pink river dolphins are a regular sight. Weekly cruises from Manaus are an alternative to a lodge.

Bonito3 nights

BonitoBonitoBonito

Brazil’s best-known ecotourism destination, set among limestone plateaus, grassland and valleys. Rainwater filtered through the limestone gives the rivers their clarity: snorkelling in the Rio Sucuri or Rio da Prata means drifting with the current among colourful fish. The Gruta do Lago Azul cave, reached by a stone staircase, holds a deep blue lake and is visited in the morning only. Excursions have limited capacity and should be reserved in advance. The town itself has a lively main street with bars, restaurants and small shops. Bonito combines naturally with the Southern Pantanal.

Southern Pantanal3 nights

Southern PantanalSouthern PantanalSouthern Pantanal

The Pantanal is a lowland of more than 150,000 km² that floods in the wet season, the largest wetland in the world. The southern part is reached via Campo Grande and combines well with Bonito. Lodges work on full board with daily excursions; typical sightings are jabiru storks, hyacinth macaws, giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, caimans and several monkey species. Jaguars occur throughout the Pantanal but are seen less often here than around Porto Jofre in the north. Best wildlife viewing in the dry season (July–October); the wet season (January–March) is the time for water birds and landscapes; November–December for young animals.

Salvador2 nights

SalvadorSalvadorSalvador

Salvador, capital of Bahia and former capital of Brazil, sits on a peninsula overlooking the Baía de Todos os Santos and is the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture: capoeira, the drums of Olodum and the Candomblé tradition. The historic centre, Pelourinho, is a treasure of colonial architecture and baroque churches that comes alive after dark with restaurants, bars and live music. Salvador’s carnival is famous for its participatory character. Accommodation ranges across all comfort classes, and the city combines well with Praia do Forte, Morro de São Paulo or the Chapada Diamantina. The cuisine mixes African, indigenous and Portuguese influences; try the moqueca.

Chapada Diamantina4 nights

Chapada DiamantinaChapada DiamantinaChapada Diamantina

The Chapada Diamantina is a national park of 1,500 km² in the interior of Bahia, about 420 km (6 hours) from Salvador: table mountains, canyons, waterfalls and caves with blue water, with the colonial diamond town of Lençóis as the base. Lençóis has the best infrastructure, with pousadas in colonial houses, restaurants and guides; the villages of Mucugê, Igatu and Andaraí date from the nineteenth-century diamond rush. Highlights are the Morro do Pai Inácio viewpoint, the Poço Azul and Poço Encantado caves (sunlight falls straight in between April and September), the 340-metre Cachoeira da Fumaça, the Lapa Doce and Pratinha caves and the multi-day Vale do Pati trek. Day trips go by 4x4 with a guide; the short walks suit everyone. The dry season from April to October has clear days and cool nights; waterfalls are strongest after rain.

Praia do Forte2 nights

Praia do FortePraia do FortePraia do Forte

Praia do Forte lies 80 km (1 hour) north of Salvador on the Coconut Coast of Bahia: 12 km of palm-lined beach with reefs and natural pools, the Tamar sea-turtle project and a car-free village centre with restaurants and shops. The former fishing village is now one of the best-organised resorts of Brazil, with large resorts next to small pousadas; neighbouring Itacimirim is quieter. Highlights are the natural pools in the reef at low tide, the Tamar centre with turtle hatchlings in season (September to March), humpback whale watching from July to October, the ruins of the Garcia d’Ávila castle and the Atlantic rainforest of the Sapiranga reserve with trails, canoes and a zipline. Warm all year; September to March is the driest and sunniest.

Maceió2 nights

MaceióMaceióMaceió

Maceió, capital of Alagoas, lies on one of the most beautiful coasts of Brazil: white city beaches with emerald water (Pajuçara, Ponta Verde, Jatiúca), natural pools in the reef reached by jangada at low tide, and to the south the beaches of Praia do Francês, Barra de São Miguel and Praia do Gunga with its cliffs. Other excursions go to the Lagoa Mundaú with its nine islands and mangroves, the colonial town of Penedo on the São Francisco river and north to the Costa dos Corais. The airport is 30 minutes from the beaches; by road Maceió is 4 hours from Recife, which makes it a logical stop on the coastal self-drive. Warm all year, driest and sunniest from September to March; the natural pools are visited at low tide.

Maragogi3 nights

MaragogiMaragogiMaragogi

Maragogi lies on the Costa dos Corais in Alagoas, halfway between Recife and Maceió (both about 2 hours by road): the largest coastal reef of Brazil, with the natural pools of the Galés 6 km offshore, white beaches and coconut plantations. It is a small town with pousadas and a few resorts; the beaches of Antunes, Peroba and Burgalhau north of the centre are the finest, with calm, clear water behind the reef. Highlights are snorkelling among fish and turtles in the Galés by catamaran at low tide (visitor numbers are limited and the pools are only accessible for a few hours a day), Praia de Antunes, the quiet pousadas of São Miguel dos Milagres 30 minutes south and boat trips along the reef and the Japaratinga lagoon. Best time September to March.

Nascente Azul offers a great day out with a range of activities. The main attraction is a 300-metre river snorkelling trail in crystal-clear water full of fish — like swimming in a life-size aquarium. The trail is not strenuous, as there is hardly any current, so it is also suitable for children. There is also a 400-metre zipline, a giant swing and a large lake for swimming, with walkways and a small zipline that drops you into the water. A restaurant on site serves lunch. Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel; a local guide is included, and an English-speaking guide can be booked in advance.

Salvador: walking tour of the historic centre PelourinhoSalvador: walking tour of the historic centre PelourinhoSalvador: walking tour of the historic centre Pelourinho

The walking tour through the historic centre is a great way to feel the unique energy of this place and its people. Pelourinho, the historic heart of Salvador, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 and is an outstanding example of colonial history and a symbol of the Black movement in Bahia, with churches, museums, artists’ studios, galleries, shops and restaurants. The main sights are the house of the writer Jorge Amado, the cultural group Olodum, the São Francisco church and the Cathedral Basilica, and the traditional Cravinho bar. There is time to shop and, optionally, to visit the Pierre Verger gallery or the studio of textile designer Goya Lopes. The last stop is the Elevador Lacerda from 1873, which connects the upper and lower town, with a panoramic view over the Bay of All Saints and the Mercado Modelo.
