Destinations

9 destinations

Cuiabá2 nights

CuiabáCuiabáCuiabá

Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso, is the gateway to the North Pantanal: the Transpantaneira road starts at nearby Poconé and ends 150 km further at Porto Jofre. The city is mainly an overnight stop between flights and the Pantanal, with hotels in all classes near the airport and in the centre. It also gives access to Chapada dos Guimarães and Nobres.

Southern Amazon3 nights

Southern AmazonSouthern AmazonSouthern Amazon

The Southern Amazon in Mato Grosso is the transition zone where the Cerrado savannah meets the rainforest: unlike the flooded forest around Manaus this is dry land with giant trees, crystal-clear rivers and an exceptional richness of birds, reached by road from Cuiabá. Jardim da Amazônia Lodge, four hours from Cuiabá on the Rio Claro near São José do Rio Claro, is a 100-hectare property with a sustainability label, boat trips, walks and bird-watching, on the route Chapada – Nobres – Pantanal; further north near Alta Floresta lies the Cristalino Jungle Lodge with its canopy towers. Birds include harpy eagle, hoatzin, macaws, toucans and the rare white-cheeked saki; also tapirs, monkeys and giant otters. Dry season May to October with the most bird activity; June to August pleasant, September and October hot. Count on three nights.

Chapada dos Guimarães2 nights

Chapada dos GuimarãesChapada dos GuimarãesChapada dos Guimarães

Chapada dos Guimarães is a national park 64 km (one hour) from Cuiabá: red sandstone plateaus of 600 to 800 m, the 86-metre Véu de Noiva waterfall, canyons, caves and the Cerrado savannah with macaws and toucans. The plateau lies on the watershed between the Amazon basin and the Pantanal and on the geographic centre of South America; the small village has pousadas, restaurants and guides. Highlights: Véu de Noiva, the Cidade de Pedra on the edge of the plateau with a 350-metre view over the plain, the circuit of seven waterfalls with swimming spots, the Rio Claro valley and the Aroe Jari cave, and the sunset at the Mirante do Centro Geodésico. Dry and clear from May to September with cool nights (15–30 °C); rain from October to April, when the waterfalls are at their strongest. Count on two nights, usually before the Northern Pantanal.

Nobres1 night

NobresNobresNobres

Nobres lies two hours north of Cuiabá in Mato Grosso and is the river-snorkelling paradise of the Northern Pantanal route: crystal-clear rivers and lagoons around the village of Bom Jardim, comparable to Bonito but smaller and quieter. The water is filtered by limestone; in a wetsuit you float among shoals of dourado and piraputanga down the Rio Salobra or Rio Triste, swim among the fish in the Aquário Encantado spring, or watch hundreds of macaws come in to the palms around the Lagoa das Araras at the end of the afternoon. Other highlights: the Serra Azul waterfall with its natural pool and the Gruta da Lagoa Azul cave. Clearest water and pleasant weather (20–30 °C) from May to September; the excursions have visitor limits and are reserved in advance. Count on one or two nights between Chapada dos Guimarães and the Pantanal.

Northern Pantanal4 nights

Northern PantanalNorthern PantanalNorthern Pantanal

The North Pantanal, reached via Cuiabá and the unpaved Transpantaneira road, is the world’s best place to see jaguars in the wild, especially around Porto Jofre. Lodges along the Transpantaneira offer full-board packages with walks, horseback rides, boat trips and vehicle safaris. The dry season (July–October) is the top period for wildlife and jaguar safaris; the wet season brings green landscapes and abundant water birds. The region combines well with the red cliffs and waterfalls of Chapada dos Guimarães and the crystal-clear rivers of Nobres.

Porto Jofre

Porto JofrePorto JofrePorto Jofre

Porto Jofre, at the end of the Transpantaneira, is the jaguar capital of the world. Where the Cuiabá river meets other waterways, low water in the dry season forces jaguars to hunt along the exposed riverbanks, where they are easily observed from boats without disturbing them. Safaris run in the cooler morning and late-afternoon hours with specialised guides. Besides jaguars: giant otters, capybaras, caimans and birds such as kingfishers, herons and jabiru storks. Accommodation ranges from the authentic Pousada Porto Jofre (with renovated suites) and the comfortable Santa Rosa and Hotel Porto Jofre to the floating Jaguar Suites and Flotel in the middle of jaguar territory.

Foz do Iguaçu2 nights

Foz do IguaçuFoz do IguaçuFoz do Iguaçu

The Iguaçu falls: 275 falls over a width of 2.7 km, with the Devil’s Throat at the centre. Walkways lead close to the foot of the falls; boat trips and helicopter flights are optional. The town lies at the triple border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay; the national parks on both sides protect subtropical forest with more than 400 bird species. Accommodation ranges from the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas inside the park to hotels in town. The falls carry most water in the Brazilian summer (November–March).

Rio de Janeiro3 nights

Rio de JaneiroRio de JaneiroRio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a metropolis of about 6.7 million people set between forested granite peaks and the Atlantic. Most clients stay in the Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), which puts the beaches, the Sugarloaf cable car and the Corcovado train within a short drive.

The two icons — Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and the Sugarloaf — are half-day visits each and can be combined in one day. Beyond them, the usual programme covers the Santa Teresa neighbourhood and the Selarón steps, the Tijuca forest (the largest urban forest in the world) and the Maracanã stadium.

Practical: daily direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), which is why Rio is the standard entry point. Transfers from GIG to the Zona Sul take 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. Barra da Tijuca, 30 minutes west, is a quieter, family-oriented beach district often used for a last night close to the airport road.

Paraty5 nights

ParatyParatyParaty

Paraty is a preserved colonial port town on the Costa Verde, about three hours by road from Rio and midway between Rio and São Paulo. It was one of Brazil’s richest towns before Rio’s rise, then stagnated — which is why the 17th-century centre, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, survived intact.

The historic centre is pedestrian, with a good density of restaurants and bars. Excursions cover the bay (schooner or speedboat trips to islands and beaches, kayaking), the surrounding rainforest and waterfalls (jeep tours, hikes, horse riding) and the cachaça distilleries.

Practical: usually combined with Ilha Grande; road transfers from Rio, Ilha Grande (via Angra) and São Paulo. Works well as a self-drive stop on a Rio–São Paulo route.

Bird watching with a local guide, Vila Mont LodgeBird watching with a local guide, Vila Mont LodgeBird watching with a local guide, Vila Mont Lodge

During the stay at Vila Mont a very good nature and bird guide, such as Chico, is at your disposal and is also your driver. He knows the best spots and agrees the excursion goals with you for the coming days. Choices include several good forest areas, a hummingbird garden where 6 to 9 species can be seen and photographed at close range, higher parts of the Mata Atlântica, and a walk of about 3 hours followed by a boat trip along the beaches of Saco do Mamanguá. More than 400 species have been recorded in the region, 100 of them Atlantic Forest endemics, among them jacamars, puffbirds, aracaris, toucans, trogons, motmots and many hummingbirds. Feeders at the lodge bring species close to your room. A reserve visit combined with relaxed rafting can be booked locally at extra cost.
