Rio de JaneiroRio de JaneiroRio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a metropolis of about 6.7 million people set between forested granite peaks and the Atlantic. Most clients stay in the Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), which puts the beaches, the Sugarloaf cable car and the Corcovado train within a short drive.

The two icons — Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and the Sugarloaf — are half-day visits each and can be combined in one day. Beyond them, the usual programme covers the Santa Teresa neighbourhood and the Selarón steps, the Tijuca forest (the largest urban forest in the world) and the Maracanã stadium.

Practical: daily direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), which is why Rio is the standard entry point. Transfers from GIG to the Zona Sul take 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. Barra da Tijuca, 30 minutes west, is a quieter, family-oriented beach district often used for a last night close to the airport road.

Ilha Grande3 nights

Ilha GrandeIlha GrandeIlha Grande

Ilha Grande is a car-free island 100 km south-west of Rio, 5 km off the coast, covered in Atlantic rainforest and ringed by beaches. The village of Vila do Abraão on the north-east side is where the boats arrive and where nearly all accommodation is; everything else is reached on foot or by boat.

Typical programme: a boat day to Lagoa Azul and Saco do Céu for snorkelling, the walk or boat to Lopes Mendes beach (regularly listed among Brazil’s best), and forest trails ranging from a couple of hours to multi-day.

Practical: from Rio, 2.5–3 hours by road to Conceição de Jacareí or Angra dos Reis, then 20–90 minutes by boat depending on the type. Shared (SIB) transfers run on fixed schedules; private transfers are available. Combine with Paraty, a further 1.5 hours down the coast.
